Global Ocean Temperatures Hit Record High Amidst Strengthening El Niño
Average surface temperature outside polar regions reached 21.1C on Saturday, surpassing previous records as scientists warn of a potentially historic El Niño event.

The planet's seas outside the polar regions reached an average surface temperature of 21.1C (70F) on Saturday.
Oceans absorb over 90% of the excess heat trapped by humanity's greenhouse gas emissions. This long-term trend now faces intensification from natural climate cycles.
El Niño introduces unusually warm waters to the surface of the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean. Experts confirm it adds further heat to an ocean already warming for decades due to human-caused climate change.
A growing Super El Niño develops in the tropical Pacific, driving a huge buildup of hot water stretching out towards Oceania. Scientists expect El Niño to keep strengthening until Christmas; warnings indicate it is on course to be the strongest in centuries.
Warming in the Pacific could reach 3°C (5.4°F); some projections indicate an increase as high as 4°C (7.2°F). Samantha Burgess stated, "This is yet another sign of our climate system under strain and the ocean under immense pressure."

The number of marine heatwave days globally has more than tripled since the early 1990s. The southern hemisphere, containing more of the planet's ocean water, influences the distribution of this warming.
The world’s most recent La Niña event lasted from late 2020 to early 2023, preceding the current El Niño phase. Warming seas disrupt atmospheric conditions, exacerbate storm intensity and rainfall, and amplify land heatwaves by limiting the cooling effects of nighttime sea breezes.
Samantha Burgess explained, "When we have a warmer ocean such as we’ve had in Europe this summer, it amplifies the impact of heat waves because you don’t get the cooler nighttime temperatures with the sea breeze coming off the ocean when the ocean is very warm."
The UK experienced a dry July in 2026, reportedly the driest in 190 years, with drought conditions in England and Wales. Hurricane Lala reportedly brought flooding and torrential rain, killing May Doi.
The Peruvian anchovy fishery, the world's largest, frequently collapses during El Niño cycles. It faces extreme risk under current temperatures.
Boris Worm noted that "anchovies can't leave so they just don't reproduce or starve." He added that "not everybody is hit equally, obviously, but the whole system collapses."

Boris Worm compared it to pulling the rug out from underneath an economy, stating, "It’s, like, the whole thing collapses. Some sectors may do a little bit better, but overall, everybody suffers."
Heat-sensitive coral populations have declined to roughly a fifth of their 1990s levels. Boris Worm remarked, "The thing that makes my heart sink is that this starts so early and it's so out-of-normal that you know when it hits its peak, it's going to be unprecedented."
Boris Worm concluded, "The ocean is not supposed to do this," and "It's just that there is no normal anymore." John Bruno described the situation as "frightening," expressing concern for the southern hemisphere in February and March.
Jane Lubchenco warned, "An ocean this warm destabilizes weather patterns and threatens food security, economic prosperity and marine life," adding, "A warmer ocean is not our friend." Rick Spinrad underscored the broader implications, stating, "as long as we depend on a healthy ocean for our safety, prosperity and wellbeing, these record-breaking sea surface temperatures portend even greater challenges for us all."
