Emergency services were called to Fistral Beach in Newquay on Sunday evening, where a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The South Western Ambulance Service alerted police at approximately 9:45 PM on Sunday, July 26, after reports of two individuals recovered from the water.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman confirmed the tragic outcome: 'Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene.'
HM Coastguard initiated a large-scale rescue operation earlier, around 9:30 PM, following an urgent alert.
An HM Coastguard spokesperson detailed the extensive response: 'HM Coastguard has been responding to an incident in the South Fistral area, Newquay, overnight.'
The spokesperson further clarified the deployment: 'First informed at around 9.30pm (26 July), Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes, lifeboats from Newquay RNLI and an HM Coastguard helicopter were sent to the scene, alongside other emergency services.'

Witnesses described an overwhelming emergency presence, with up to nine emergency vehicles reportedly at the beach and a rescue helicopter circling overhead.
Police established a cordon at the scene, which has since been removed, as confirmed by the Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman.

The sea at Fistral Beach was described as very rough with strong winds and large waves on Sunday evening, despite the temperature in Newquay reaching 20.2C.
This incident follows other recent coastal tragedies, including a man who died after getting into difficulty in the water off West Wittering, West Sussex, on Sunday afternoon.
Police were called to West Wittering beach at about 2:30 PM on Sunday after two men got into difficulty in the water, where the temperature reached 26.5C.
Earlier in the week, a mother and her 15-year-old daughter died in a beach incident in Essex on Wednesday, July 22.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the victims at Fistral Beach may have been a father and daughter; the male victim reportedly entered the water fully clothed to rescue his daughter.
It is also understood that they may have been walking near the rocks and fallen in, though their local or holidaymaker status remains unclear.
The female victim is understood to have entered the water carrying an orange or peach-coloured handbag with a shoulder strap, which police are now searching for.
This handbag, approximately 30cm by 30cm, is believed to contain personal items and may offer further insight into the tragic events.
The formal process will continue as authorities prepare a file for HM Coroner, as stated by the Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman: 'A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.'
