Two police officers sustained serious injuries in Larkhall, southeast of Glasgow, after a van was deliberately driven at them on Saturday afternoon.
Police Scotland officers conducted routine inquiries in the Milton area of Glasgow when the assault occurred; a white Renault Trafic van deliberately targeted the two officers.
Both officers, aged 43 and 41, sustained injuries requiring hospitalization; the 41-year-old officer has since received discharge, while the 43-year-old remains in stable condition.
Authorities recovered the white Renault Trafic van involved in the attack; the vehicle is now undergoing forensic examination.
This was a deliberate and despicable attack on two officers who were simply carrying out their duties.
Gary Smillie condemned the act, stating, 'This was a deliberate and despicable attack on two officers who were simply carrying out their duties.'
No other individuals reported injuries during the incident; the focus remains solely on the assault against the two officers.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6ft tall, who wore dark shorts, a grey jumper, and a beige baseball cap during the attack.
Robust responses are demanded to protect those who serve the public; the police force faces significant challenges in maintaining officer safety amidst rising aggression.
Historically, deliberate attacks on officers, such as the 2020 incident in Paisley where two officers were stabbed, have often led to intensified police operations and community reassurance efforts, with over 50 additional patrols deployed in that instance.
Paul Doyle affirmed, 'I would like to reassure the community that we are working to trace the person responsible and will continue to carry out inquiries in the local area.'
The ongoing investigation aims to apprehend the individual responsible for this violent act; local inquiries continue as Police Scotland gathers further evidence.
Officers work diligently to trace the suspect; the commitment to justice for the assaulted officers remains paramount, reflecting public and political pressure for accountability from figures like First Minister Humza Yousaf.
