Platner Suspends Maine Senate Campaign Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Platner attributed his withdrawal directly to threats from Democrats, claiming they would cut off campaign support. He asserted the party acted 'as judge, jury and executioner' in their response to the accusations.

A woman who dated Platner brought forward allegations, claiming he forced her to have sex nearly five years ago. He vehemently denied these sexual assault claims, stating, 'The things that have been claimed did not happen. It’s not real.'

Platner further declared, 'Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false.' An ex-girlfriend claimed Platner removed condoms without her consent during sex on at least six occasions.

Another former partner also came forward, claiming Platner twisted her arm behind her back and held her in a room. Platner accused the Democratic establishment and corporate media of 'using these allegations to take away all of the things we need to run a campaign.'

He claimed 'large forces' actively 'working against [him] personally' drove these accusations. Platner stated he learned about the allegations through press inquiries, receiving no time for investigations before the media and political establishment acted.

Beyond the legal debate, the Maine Democratic Party now plans to hold a nominating convention to select a new candidate. The deadline to select a replacement candidate is July 27, setting a tight timeline for the party.

Platner claimed the process to replace him would be 'open and democratic moving forward' and needs to reflect 'the will and the values of the people that built this movement.' However, Devon-Murphy Anderson, Maine Democratic Party Executive Director, accused the Platner campaign of trying to put its 'thumb on the scale of what this process looks like.'

Anderson stated the Platner campaign has no role in determining the next Democratic nominee or the process itself. Democrats view this Maine Senate seat as a key race for gaining control of the Senate, currently held by Republican incumbent Susan Collins.

The sudden vacancy forces Democrats to rally behind a new candidate in a crucial swing state. Meanwhile, Samantha Cantrell, National Republican Senatorial Committee regional spokesperson, stated, 'Maine Democrats elected a rapist Nazi to be their nominee for Senate.'

Platner denied knowledge of the origins of a tattoo resembling a Nazi Totenkopf symbol, despite claims from a former partner that he knew its meaning. He also apologized for past online comments, attributing them to untreated post-traumatic stress disorder.
