Glacier Collapse Triggers Deadly Nepal Floods

Devastation in Himalayan villages follows seismic event initially mistaken for earthquake, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing.

Flash floods ravaged Nepalese villages on Wednesday, August 26, causing widespread destruction.
Satellite imagery confirmed a large section of a glacier broke away at approximately 5,200 meters altitude, plummeting roughly 1,200 meters.
This resulting avalanche struck the Lhende River in Tibet, temporarily damming it before releasing a powerful flood downstream.
Water levels in rivers surged by as much as 9 meters (29.5 feet) in just 30 minutes, overwhelming communities.
The flood reportedly destroyed homes, swamped roads, and swept away bridges; satellite imagery confirmed the destruction of houses, roads, and power projects.
At least 19 bridges and around 40km of roads have been destroyed across Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.
Nearly 1,400 individuals remain unaccounted for, including 650 foreign nationals and 33 British tourists.
Tibetan officials reported three deaths and 558 missing, while hundreds of foreign tourists are feared dead on the border between Nepal and the Tibet region.
Rescuers deployed helicopters on Thursday to search for survivors and deliver emergency supplies.
Damaged hydropower infrastructure has left some areas without electricity, impacting about 10% of Nepal’s power production located in the affected valley.
Nepali authorities received word of the flood around 9:00 am local time and issued alerts.
