Chris Anne Affleck, mother of Academy Award-winning actors Ben and Casey Affleck, died on June 2, 2026, at the age of 82, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in December 1942 in New York City, Ms. Affleck dedicated 35 years to public school teaching, retiring in 2008.
Her son, Ben Affleck, affirmed, "My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master’s there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school."
She graduated from Harvard University, subsequently relocating to Massachusetts in the mid-1970s, where she continued her teaching career.
Chris was suitably proud of her descendants’ achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority.
Beyond her work in education, Ms. Affleck committed herself to civil rights activism, teaching literacy classes in Meridian, Mississippi, during the pivotal 1964 Freedom Summer campaign.
Her activism extended to volunteering on the campaign trail for former US president Barack Obama, contributing to his 2008 and 2012 victories.
Ms. Affleck also served as a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project in Truro, Massachusetts, promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Her involvement contributed to the successful implementation of community-led renewable energy initiatives and educational programs, shaping the future of local environmental policy.
She traveled to Palestine and Israel, becoming an organizer with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine, focusing on critical civil rights and water justice initiatives.
Her obituary noted, "Chris was suitably proud of her descendants’ achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority."
This spirit manifested when "her granddaughter’s student activist group needed a space for trainings, she invited them to Truro and attended every single workshop herself, taking notes," supporting future generations directly.
Her sons achieved significant success in Hollywood; Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 'Good Will Hunting' in 1998.
Ben Affleck recalled attending the ceremony with their mothers, stating, "We were sitting next to our moms and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms."
He added, "I remember how everyone had made such a big thing out of it as if this was such a novelty," highlighting the unique intersection of her private life with public spectacle.
Casey Affleck later won Best Actor for 'Manchester by the Sea' in 2017, and Ben Affleck secured a second Oscar for 'Argo' in 2012, further cementing the family's place in the entertainment industry.
Despite the public spotlight on her sons, Chris Anne Affleck maintained a private life, reportedly celebrating holidays and taking strolls with Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck's former wife.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their separation in 2015, finalizing their divorce in 2018, a period of significant personal transition for the family.
Following her diagnosis, Chris Anne reportedly contacted her friend Josh Laub to record 'oral histories of his time as a principal in the South Bronx,' indicating a profound desire to preserve narratives and engage with her legacy.
Her obituary highlighted her aspiration "to both see the world and change it," a sentiment that guided her life of teaching and activism, leaving an enduring impact on the societal landscape.
